Tradition on the River

by Tony Reffke

As a family-owned business that has stood the test of time for over 50 years, the Lox Club offers a true supper club atmosphere. The restaurant started as a dream, and has flourished into an icon tucked away on the banks of the Fox River in Combined Locks. Their dedicated staff provides a welcoming atmosphere and a menu loaded with hearty meals.

Primarily known for their steaks, the Lox Club offers a choice of tenderloin, rib-eye, sirloin, porterhouse, and New York strip cuts. The tenderloin is the most popular of them all and weighs in as either a petite 7-ounce or a large 10-ounce. The steaks are served every day; however, those with a mightier appetite would want to visit on Saturday when prime rib is served in either a 12-ounce Queen cut or an 18-ounce King cut. Rib lovers will delight in a rack of baby back pork ribs served with a luscious homemade BBQ sauce. Yum!

Even though Friday is typically reserved for fish fry, the Lox Club offers a full array of seafood every night. The usual suspects of perch, pike, and haddock are available in addition to shrimp and scallops and all can be combined into a mouth-watering seafood platter. You’ll also find one of the more unusual and hoppier choices of frog legs, which are breaded and deep fried. I would recommend trying frog legs at least once, as they are a rare, delectable treat.

All of the seafood options can be combined with a tenderloin, pork chop, ribs, or broasted chicken to create a delicious surf and turf meal.

Any entrée can be upgraded to include “Oscar,” a very flavorful mixture of Hollandaise sauce, crab meat, and steamed asparagus that covers your favorite dinner selection.

All entrées are served with your choice of potato or side with options such as baked, mashed, twice-baked, french fries, broasted, potato skins, hash browns, wild rice, steamed vegetables, or homemade potato salad, when available. And who could pass up a flavorful French onion soup, which is made daily.

Craving a sensational French Dip sandwich? Look no further — on the menu, sliced prime rib topped with mozzarella cheese and a side of au jus is just delicious. Juicy hamburgers and cheeseburgers are made with 100% Angus beef. Rounding out the sandwich options are a 5-ounce tenderloin filet, a broiled chicken sandwich, and a grilled cheese sandwich.

Lighter portions of various entrées are available, and the children’s menu provides favorites such as grilled cheese bites, chicken strips, and macaroni and cheese. Leave room for dessert as they offer various rotating cheesecakes.

The bar opens daily at 4 p.m. and includes a snack table where you can help yourself to homemade cream cheese spread or liver pâté which are available to purchase and take home.

The Lox Club serves food from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and 4:30-9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. They are closed on Mondays.
