Brewpub Set in Stone
by Tony Reffke
Nestled between the locks in the flats of Appleton, Stone Arch Brewpub has a truly unique location in the city. The building was originally constructed in 1858 to house a brewery and has continued to be a site of beer production in some way ever since. Walking through the stone walls offers an old world feel to the décor and a comfortable ambiance.
Stone Arch Brewpub was first established in 2004 by father and son partners, Tom and Steve Lonsway. Since opening, they have continued to expand and have positioned Stone Arch to be a leader in creating great beer and delicious food.
Stone Arch Brewpub makes traditional pub fare with a variety of burgers, sandwiches, salads, and specialty pizzas. Their philosophy to provide local and sustainable foods resonates throughout their entire menu as they offer all-natural meats and organic fruits and vegetables.
They have fantastic vegan and vegetarian options such as the Buddha Bowl and Indian Curry as well as an Impossible Burger and a Portabella Melt. If you would rather dive into your wild side, try a bison or elk burger sourced from Navarino Farms in Shiocton. The Atlantic Salmon with Lobster Cream Sauce is a popular entrée along with the Shepherd’s Pie, a hearty meal of beef and vegetables with a cheesy mashed potato crust.
Every place in the state serves cheese curds, but their cheese curds have been rated best in Wisconsin and are hand-made using their Stone Arch Scottish Ale. Yum!
German-inspired Schnitzels are a favorite throughout the state and Stone Arch makes two delectable options in the Jaeger Schnitzel and Brewer’s Schnitzel, which is topped with beer cheese sauce and bacon. This very satisfying and filling meal contains a slice of fried pork served over spaetzle noodles with fresh vegetables.
Along with these wonderful menu items, you can find weekly specials and daily features in the restaurant and live music every Tuesday.
Stone Arch Brewpub is committed to helping the community through their outreach program, Stepping Stones. They provide financial support as well as time and service to various local non-profit organizations in working toward a better world for all of us.
Readers of last month’s issue of Appleton Monthly will have seen the article about the Stone Arch Tied House that is opening in Little Chute later this year. The Stone Arch Tied House will be owned and operated by the Stone Arch Brewpub team and will be similar to their flagship restaurant with some exclusive menu items and their fantastic hand-crafted beers. Watch for the announcement and grand opening coming soon!
